Stone was a farmer all of his life, starting out doing custom work with his equipment for other farmers. He owned and operated a threshing machine. In 1944 German war prisoners from a camp in Salem helped him thresh wheat. He said they were fascinated by his "A" John Deere that he bought new and still owns. He leased land, raised wheat, barley, oats, hay and beef cattle. He started a landscaping business in the early 60's seeding golf courses and schools in Roanoke and surrounding counties. In 1971 he was able to buy his own farm in Botetourt County. The family would like to thank Gentle Shepherd Hospice and staff and caregiver, Jackie Maas for all of their help and support.
