Obituary of Mabrey Ramsey Hunt

Mabrey Wade Ramsey Hunt, 93, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2023, surrounded by family and her amazing caregivers. She was born on April 11, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, to her parents, Guy and Thelma Ramsey, who began affectionally calling her “Tootsie” at a young age.

She grew up with 3 sisters on a tobacco farm, which is a meaningful place her family is still able to enjoy to this day. From a young age family was very important to her. She graduated from Climax High School in 1947 and went on to attend Radford University then graduated from James Madison University. She married George C. Hunt on July 3, 1952. She had a passion for teaching and taught at various schools throughout out her career. These schools include: Goochland Schools, Franklin County High School, Glenvar High School, Northside Jr. High School, William Byrd  High School where she taught home economics as well as the 4th grade at Burlington Elementary School. She enjoyed her students and was able to be in contact with many of them throughout the years. During her time teaching she received the Outstanding Teacher of The Year award in Virginia. She retired in 1988 from William Byrd High School to be able to spend more time with her family.

She was an amazing mother to Michael and Karen, they were the light of her life but she really lit up around her grandchildren. She enjoyed sharing her passion to garden, sew and bake but every experience and time spent with them was special to her. When her grandchildren had their own children she was overjoyed to be a great-grandmother. In recent years as her health declined she had phenomenal caregivers, exceptional doctors and kind-hearted neighbors who loved her and made her days special. We will all cherish the memories made and will hold them tight.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Guy and Thelma Ramsey; her three sisters, Marcia Ramsey, Ruby Grubb (JB), and Marylee Riddle (Dallas.)

She is survived by her loving husband of almost 71 years, George C Hunt of Roanoke, Va; her two children, Karen Woodbury(Holt) and Dr. Michael Hunt (Samantha Hill), both of Roanoke,Va.; six grandchildren, Timothy Shelton(Elisa) of Staunton, Va., Halie Mahoney (Shane) of Franklin County, Va., Kristin Beadsaul (Adam) of Galax, Va., Leah Witt (Brody) of Pearisburg, Va., Ryan Hunt (Lilly Blair) of Salem, Va., and Chloe Hunt of Roanoke, Va.; five great-grandchildren, William Shelton, Cameron and Cooper Beadsaul, Owen and Noah Witt, and two more expected in the fall Hunter and Ember Mahoney; and family member, Judith Ramsey of Danville, Va.

We especially want to thank all of her wonderful caregivers, doctors and neighbors who have been amazing over the past few years.

A funeral service honoring Mabrey’s life will be held Saturday, June 17, 2023, 12 noon at Simpson Funeral Home Peters Creek Road Chapel. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive family and friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday June 16, 2023, at Simpson Funeral Home Peters Creek Road Chapel.
