Please share a memory of Alan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Alan Gregory Trent, 71, passed from this life to the next on Wednesday, February 15, 2023. He was born in Roanoke, VA and was the son of Jean Old Trent and the late Warren Trent.

Alan was a graduate of William Fleming High School. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Mars Hill College followed by his Masters of Theology and Doctorate of Ministry degrees from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was ordained to the ministry at North Roanoke Baptist Church and went on to serve churches in the American Baptist Convention and the United Church of Christ. He was most currently attending St. James Episcopal Church in Roanoke and was also a practicing Buddhist. He believed that one was not exclusive of the other and he weaved them together beautifully.

He enjoyed being outdoors whether it was surfing at the ocean or spending time in the mountains. He was an avid reader, a music lover, and a guitar player. He held very strong and passionate progressive political views and volunteered for several campaigns locally.

In addition to his mother, Jean O. Trent, he will be missed and remembered by his daughters, Christiana Noel Emery and Angelique Nicole Trent and son-in-law, Patrick McGranaghan; close friend, Dori Bongiovanni; former wife, Patricia H. Trent; cousin, Gary Harper and his wife Carol.

A service to celebrate Alan’s life will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at St. James Episcopal Church with Rev. Susan Bentley officiating. The family will speak to guests following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the local ASPCA 1340 Baldwin Avenue NE Roanoke, VA 24012, the World Wildlife Fund at www.worldwildlife.org, or the Blue Ridge Cancer Center, 2013 S. Jefferson Street, Roanoke, VA 24014.
