Obituary of Donald Ray Scott, Jr.

Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Donald Ray Scott, Jr. "Scottie", was born to Donald and Phyllis Scott on June 27, 1968 in Roanoke, VA and went to be with the Lord February 19th, 2023 in Roanoke, VA after a courageous battle with cancer.

He is predeceased by his father Donald Ray Scott Sr and sister Terry Lynn Davis

He is survived by his three children Rebecca Jane McWilliams, son in law Griffin McWilliams, Glenn Donald Scott, and Mary Stewart Scott. He was additionally blessed with a granddaughter Rowan Rae McWilliams, He is also survived by Christine, his then wife and mother of their children ; his mother Phyllis Scott, his sister Mary Hale and brother in law Rusty Hale, his three nephews – Denton, Cameron, Luke.  His Brother-in-law Gordon and his two sons Jeremy and Zach and their families.

Donald attended Roanoke Valley Christian Schools and excelled in academics and sports; his absolute favorite being basketball.  He graduated high school with his sights set on a college degree.

Upon graduating Virginia Tech 1991, Donald and Christine married and started their family on Marwood Farm in Fayetteville, Pennsylvania. They turned their passion for sustainable farming into a fulltime successful small business that supported their growing family. They grew, harvested, and sold fresh vegetables, eggs, homemade bread, pastured poultry and grassfed beef at local farmers market stands and through a community supported agriculture program for 13 years.

After moving back to Roanoke, VA he continued gardening as a hobby, but devoted himself to his career as a respiratory therapist working at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He worked tirelessly during COVID, wearing a respirator for long 12-hour days and working overtime when they were short staffed. He went above and beyond for patients and coworkers, saving many lives.

Although he was passionate about a holistic lifestyle and liked to follow the blood type diet, he could not resist a giant homemade chocolate chip cookie. He was also active in adult soccer leagues in Roanoke. To know Donald is to know his unique laugh, his love of food, and his ability to listen.

He will forever be remembered for his love of Jesus, his love of family and his love of tending the soil.

We would like to express gratitude for family and friends who supported Donald and our family during this time, especially the warm ladies of Gentle Shephard Hospice – Maggie, Pam, Donna, and Maryluz.
