I was an anxious kid, a worrier, and a full blown hypochondriac. Grandma used to comfort me with her words of wisdom and encouragement and I would always find myself feeling much better after a conversation with her. I remember one time I was having pain in my chest and even though I was a young and healthy adolescent, I convinced myself I was having a heart attack or something similarly sinister. Grandma, as always, admonished me to calm myself and not think the worst. She told me that sometimes chest pain can be related to gas and that I should try and burp. With the help of some soda pop and some dedicated intent on my part, I was able to conjure up a good one. And I felt better! As always, grandma knew what best to do and my worries of an untimely death quickly melted away. I will miss her steady and unwavering spirit and am grateful to have had her in my life when I did.

Q: What will you never forget about Lila?
A: I have so many loving and amazing memories that I will never forget about “GG”Thats not the name I called her growing up as her granddaughter, but its a name she coined when I had children and they asked what name they should call their great grandmother. So, it is the term of endearment Ive used most of my adult life. I remember my grandmother as being positive, spirited, and always willing to join in whatever the days events would hold. When she lived with me for periods of time throughout both my childhood and adult life, she would go everywhere my mom and I would go; the store, the mall, church, eateries, etc. I always loved having her with us because she would make me laugh and I was always so entertained by her passion and zest for life. She was a cool combination of humble and proud. She never put herself above others yet always loved opportunities to dress up and look her best. I miss the times we would sit together and chat and she would tell me stories about her life and what it was like being a teenager in the 30’s, getting married, and the challenges of motherhood. She never pushed any of her thoughts or memories onto me, but was always willing to share personal stories when I asked. It took until I was a little older to realize this. I had a high school project that required me to interview a grandparent. It was then that I realized for the first time that this amazing woman had a past and stories to tell. I have always loved my grandmother and thought what a special soul under God she is. I havent seen her in many years, but I will still always remember and miss her “essence” as a warm, witty, playful, and loving grandmother.

I loved listening to my grandma tell me about her life growing up. I loved going to their house in the mountains, getting water from the spring, and heating up bath water on the wood burning stove! I’m sure the grown ups thought of this as an inconvenience, but as a child, my grandparent’s house was an amazing adventure!! I’ll never forget the smell of the fireplace going with bacon being fried! When grandma moved in with us, I was in middle school. She was always a joy, always easy going, and I loved when she made her homemade spaghetti for us. She loved her westerns, game shows, and Lawrence Welk. Most of all she loved Jesus, and I can still hear her singing hymns. I feel so blessed to have grown up with her always around me, and I’m so glad my children knew their GG .I can’t wait to see her again.

My great grandmother Lila Conklin was always a joy to spend time with. She always made my family's trips to Salem just that little bit more enjoyable. I pray that she rests easy and that her soul rejoices with God in heaven
