I was friends with Chase in high school and we were eventually roommates with two other friends, but my favorite memory is from when Chase was living in Wilmington, NC when I visited with my friend Lee in 2010. Around 2AM we all decided to go for a walk on the beach. We parked at Johnny Mercer’s Pier on Wrightsville Beach. As we were walking, there were small pools on the shoreline from low tide. Every time we stepped in one, the little splash looked like the liquid was from a glow stick. It was so cool! Lee, Alex, James, Paulina, and I had no idea what was happening but Chase explained that it was called bioluminescence and it was caused by tiny organisms in the tide pools. In all of the many midnight walks I’ve taken on Wrightsville Beach since that night, I’ve never seen it again. It’s a memory I’ll always cherish. Rest In Peace, friend.
