Joseph Martin Hoer, Sr., 92, widower of Lillian Eleanor Barnard Hoer, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 28, 2020. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri and was the son of the late Joseph Bernard and Anna Mae Hoer. Joseph served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and then had a successful career working for Wabash / Norfolk & Western / Norfolk Southern. He will be remembered as a man who was steadfast, willing to listen, a great provider and supporter of his family, and a man who made everyone he met feel like they were longtime friends, a true gentleman. His family was everything to him. Left to carry his memory are eight of the nine children that Joseph and Lillian were blessed with; Joseph Martin Hoer Jr. (Paula), John Michael Hoer, Joan Margaret Naff, James Matthew Hoer (Stephanie), Jerome Mark Hoer (Barbara), Jeffrey Marcus Hoer (Beth), Janet Marlene Terenzi (Terence), and Jean Maureen Tyree (Jerry). From these nine children came many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Joseph was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Marie Hoer. There will be a private family graveside service held soon and later in the year a public Celebration of Life service will be held with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Roanoke Stars Wheelchair Basketball at Blue Ridge Independent Living, 1502 Williamson Rd. NE, Roanoke, VA 24012.
