Shirley Tucker Marshall 85, of Roanoke, died Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Arthur Conrad Marshall of Halifax County, VA. Shirley was born Saturday, November 18, 1933 in Campbell County (Sugar hill), VA, Shirley was the daughter of the late Frank Clyde Tucker and Senora Mason Tucker; sister of the late Troy Douglas “Doug” Tucker, Earl Preston Tucker, Luther Watkins “Watt” Tucker, and Winfred William “Doot” Tucker.

 

Shirley is survived by her daughter Tara Marshall Chitwood and her husband James of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Christian and Chloe Chitwood, Zachary and Benjamin Britten; sister-in-law, Mary Airwood Tucker of Brookneal.

 

She was a long-time member of Fallen River Baptist Church, a retired secretary from Parafax Gas Company in Brookneal, VA, an amazing mother, and the world’s best grandmother. She was a graduate of William Campbell High School and was accepted to Eastern Tennessee State University but chose to care for her parents. Shirley was an excellent bowler and for many years, was a member of several bowling teams with her husband. She loved classical music and played the piano by ear. She also loved to travel, watch gameshows, the news and loved watching the weather channel and always kept us up-to-date about weather conditions. She was an expert cook specializing in breads and desserts. She was “Mamow” to her grandchildren and taught them important life skills such as, cooking and kindness. She never met a stranger. She was kind to everyone she met.

 

Thank you to all the staff members at Carilion RMH who cared for her over the past few years. In addition, a special thank you to 9 South ICU for the kindness and care they showed during her final hours.

 

A memorial service will be held 6:30pm Wednesday April 3, 2019 at Simpson Funeral Home, Roanoke, VA, with Pastor Jill Simmons officiating. Inurnment will be private. Family will receive friends from 5:00pm until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Condolences may be left for the family at www.simpsonfuneral.com.
