Obituary of Donald H. McNabb

Donald H. “Mac” McNabb, 78, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Donald was preceded in death by his parents Louie McNabb and Ermine McNabb; sisters, Verna, Sybel, Doris, and brother Earl. Born in Valdosta, Georgia on November 21, 1939 and received his GED from Valdosta High School.

Donald was survived by his loving wife of 52 years Barbara McNabb; son, Donald McNabb and wife Kathy; daughter Connie Conner and Derrell; five grandchildren, Austin McNabb and wife Leigh, Holly Hodge and husband Luke, Dean Conner and wife Diana, Michelle Conner, Brandy Ruiz and husband Roger; eight great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He served in the United States Coast Guard for 24 years on the Tanney, the Ingram and Shatuka. He worked 5 years as an iron worker and then for the General Service Administration. He also work 15 years as a self-employed taxidermist.

He was a travel enthusiast, and Hawaii was his favorite vacation destination. Donald loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed every moment he could get to spend with family wither it was camping vacationing or any family gathering that involved food. He loved to eat!

He was well known for his faith in God, love for his family, giving heart, strong opinions that he never hesitated to give and his one of a kind signature hair style, lovingly referred to as “his wings.” He had a great sense of humor and loved to share the stories of his life. He was a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church. He would share the word of God to anyone who would listen. He was a true inspiration to his family and friends and has left some big shoes for us to fill. He will be dearly missed.

The family would like to personally thank Melissa, Diana, Teresa, and Lyn with Medi Home Health and Hospice for the exceptional care of Donald in the last days of his life. Their compassion and love of their work really shines through.

The family will receive friends Friday, October 5, 2018 from 5-7:30 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be held Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 11 a.m. at North Roanoke Baptist Church. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home & Crematory. (540)366-0707.
