Obituary of Cecil E. Ashwell, Jr.

On July 4, 2018, Cecil Edwin Ashwell, Jr. ended his fight with pulmonary fibrosis and entered into glory.

Cecil is survived by his children and their spouses; Tessa and Derrick Liferidge, Jeremy and Courtney Hood; his grandchildren, William and Matthew Hood; his sister, Glenda Kaye Garst; his niece and nephew, Lori Sanchez and Chris Garst; his great nieces and nephews, Chad Sutphin, Leslie Ann Browning-Garst, Peyton Garst, Presley Garst; one great-great nephew, ZJ; and his wife, Bertie “Suzy” Ashwell.

Cecil was born on July 2, 1946 to Cecil and Glennie Ashwell.  He grew up in Roanoke, VA and left the area when he enlisted in the United States Navy and was eventually stationed in Key West, FL and Rhode Island.  He returned to Roanoke at the end of his tour.

Most of his career was spent as a long-distance truck driver and therefore traveled many places.  Where ever Cecil traveled he never met a stranger.  He passed this endearing love of others onto his daughter.

Cecil was a very talented baseball player and was even offered a position with the Pittsburg Pirates out of high school and followed sports throughout his life.  He also enjoyed history and made some of the best popcorn around.

Cecil placed his faith in Jesus Christ and encouraged his family to do the same.  He loved to send cards to family and friends for birthdays and other occasions.  His sweet spirit and unique sense of humor will be dearly missed.

Funeral service will be 2:00pm Friday July 6, 2018 at Simpson Funeral Home; interment will be private. Family will receive friends from 12 noon until service time Friday at the funeral home.
