A true cowboy’s work was done this fall. Cowboy Bruce L. Friend went home to rest high on the range, October 2, 2016. Bruce was born on November 30, 1922, in Jenkins, Kentucky. In June of 1942 he joined the Army and served in World War II. He was seriously wounded on July 11, 1944 in the battle at Saint-Lô, France, from which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He is survived by his son Alan C. Friend and wife Vickie, her mother Patsy Orange (Granny). special granddaughter Anita Pagans and husband Jeremy; two great-grandchildren, Emerald Pagans (Little Girl) and Carter Pagans (Little Boy); son, David L. Friend and wife Diane; two grandchildren, Alicia and Josiah; son Ben Friend and wife Sharon; daughter Diane Huelskamp and husband Rob; grandsons Bryce, Ben Alan, Dustin, and Bronson; granddaughter April Lee Funaki and husband Richard, and great-grandchild Nate. As well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like the give a special thanks to the nurses, doctors, and staff that tended to our father at the Salem VA Medical Center for their exceptional loving care. The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 5, 2016 from 5-8 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home. Services will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2016 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home. (540)366-0707.
