Obituary of John Alexander Fugel

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John Alexander Fugel, 62, of Roanoke, passed away on Sunday January 31, 2016, after a valiant battle with cancer. Mr. Fugel was born in Passaic, NJ, the second child of John Joseph and Alexandra (Alice) Fugel (nee Lugovsky). His parents preceded him in death. He grew up in Clifton, NJ and attended St. Stephen’s RCM School and Pope Pius XII High School. He attended Seton Hall University, majoring in Mass Communications, and Montclair State University, where he studied broadcasting and theater arts. He leaves behind his loving wife, and best friend, Janis (nee Arbitblit), brother, Robert and wife Marie and two nephews, David and Rob; his sister, Mary Ellen Terry and his niece, Nadine McDonald and nephew Aram Beresky. A lover of the arts, he best expressed his artistic vision through photography, spending more than 40 years behind the camera. He had a deep love and appreciation of nature and landscape photography. Prior to death, Mr. Fugel wrote that he wanted to be remembered “as a gentleman and a gentle man.” To those who knew and loved him, he was both. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to charities that support the arts. The family would like to thank Dr. Suzan Merten, staff of Blue Ridge Cancer Care, and the Palliative Care Team at Carilion Clinic for their compassionate care. A memorial service celebration Mr. Fugel’s life will be held at a later date.
