Obituary of Charles Wesley Day

Charles Wesley Day, of Roanoke County departed this life at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital ,Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 1:15 a.m. He was born on January 25, 1934 in Radford, Virginia and was the son of the late Ballard and Hattie Snell Day. He was also preceded in death by two brothers's, Sidney Snell and Douglas Day, and two sisters, Ruth Snell DeHart and Virginia Day.
Charles served in the United States Army. He was a well respected educator and community leader in the Roanoke Valley. He worked in education for 30 years. He received a B.S. degree from Virginia State University, M.S. degree from Radford University, and completed advanced studies at the University of Virginia. During his tenure in education he was a teacher/coach at Central High School, Amherst, Virginia; Principal at Friends Elementary, Christiansburg, Virginia; counselor/coach at Addison High School; Principal at Loudon Elementary School; Principal at Addison High School; Principal at Ruffner Middle School; Associate Principal at Patrick Henry High School; Principal at Westside Elementary School; Counselor at Virginia Western Community College; Administrative Law Test Administrator, for the Federal Government and served on the Roanoke City School Board for 12 years and chairman for two years. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for Amherst County for 1960-61 Basketball Team of outstanding achievement in First District Championship 1960-61 Boys Basketball Champions.
Charles leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Hilda Day; daughter, Charlene Day, son, Charles (Randall) Day; his darling granddaughter, Haley Day, all of Roanoke; sisters, Maxine Day Murphy (Frank) of Blacksburg;and Frances (Doll) Day Jackson (Lorenzo) of Washington, DC; sister-in-law, Betty Draper Day of Blacksburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church 1810 Grayson Avenue by Dr. Cedric Malone. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 7th at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. 366-0707
