Obituary of Shirley Jane Martin

Shirley Jane Clarkson Martin, 79, of Roanoke was born in Harlen, Kentucky. and grew up in Gibson Station, Va. After finishing school, she moved to Roanoke where she met her husband, Fred. Shirley went to work for C & P Telephone Company, working her way into Supervision. Fred and Shirley carved a home on Reed Mountain. She put her career on hold to raiser her son, Mike and her daughter, Lisa. In 1975, Fred passed away. Shirley braved herself, sold some land, and raised her children. She went to Oakey's Funeral Service shortly after Fred's passing and finished her working life at Stuart McGuire. Shirley remained on the mountain after the children grew up and moved away. In 1993, Shirley was diagnosed with beat cancer, battled it, and won. Had another bout in 2005, and survived. The cancer returned and she could not beat it this time. Shirley is survived by her son, Mike (Candy), and her daughter, Lisa; grandchildren, Lisa, Jeremy, and Camille; great grandchildren, Cierra, Abby, Mya, Waylon, and Jaylen; sisters, Jean, Bobbie, Wanda (James) and Barbara (Dennis).
