Obituary of Marvin Ballard Tate

Marvin Ballard Tate 91 passed away in Roanoke on Friday April 24, 2015. His parents, Charles Ballard Tate and Nancy Katherine Perdue Tate preceded him. Mr. Tate graduated from Huddleston High School in 1943. Marvin served in Patton’s Third Army in World War II, from July 1, 1943 until February 1, 1946. He attended Roanoke College for 3 years, then transferred out to and graduated from the University of Florida with a Mechanical Engineering Degree in 1952. He worked for Union Carbide Nuclear Division in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and retired after 32 years in Management. He moved to Roanoke in 1987. He was taught the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Sister Missionaries and was baptized April 22, 2001. He became a High Priest and he served several callings, including about 10 years at the Family History Center. Marvin married Barbara Jeanette Henderson on July 2, 2005 in Roanoke, Virginia. He was sealed to Barbara for time and eternity at the Washington D.C. Temple on October 4, 2006. The youngest of nine children, Marvin was preceded by brothers, Charles Gordon Tate, William Leonard Tate, Jesse James Tate, Jerdy Lee Tate, Alford Tate, Irvin Moman Tate and sisters, Clara Bell Scruggs, and Myrtle Arthur Arrington. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Henderson Tate; step children, Mark Horne, Brian Horne and Rhonda Booth. Along with many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held 2:00pm Tuesday April 28, 2015 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6311 Wayburn Avenue, Salem, VA. 24153. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park with Military Honors. Viewing will be held Monday April 27, 2015 from 6:00-9:00pm at Simpson Funeral Home.
