Obituary of Detria Lea Shinn

Detria Shinn, 70, of Roanoke, passed quietly from this life into the arms of her savior on April 19th following a long, courageous battle against cancer. Detria was a lifelong member of Southview United Methodist Church. She loved animals and enjoyed shopping, travelling and loved and looked forward to any opportunity to visit the beach. She retired from Shenandoah Life Insurance Company in 2006. She is preceded in death by her parents, William T and Juanita (Fulcher) Crozier; her husband, Gary Shinn; and son-in-law, Sean Mundy. She is survived by her children, Leisa Mundy and Ginger Rose (James), stepchildren Jason Shinn (Kim) of Burlington, NC; Carrie-Ann Gadsby (Patrick) of Anderson, SC, and Paul Shinn of Roanoke; Grandchildren; Jayce Taylor, Harley Rose, Cora and Cason Shinn, Emily and Melody Gadsby, and Madison Shinn. Also surviving are her brother, William T. (Tommie) Crozier II, his wife Denise, and niece, Jenna Crozier,of Roanoke; and nephew, Richard Crozier of Northern Virginia. She is also survived by her first husband, father of her children and lifelong friend, C. P. Layman, Jr. of Salem, VA as well as many other extended family members and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Fintel and the staff at Lewis Gale Oncology, as well as Good Samaritan Hospice for their support and assistance during this battle. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11am on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road in Roanoke with the Rev. Stephen Burgess officiating. Interment will follow the service at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 22 from 1-3 PM and from 5-8 PM at the funeral home.
