MSGT Tyrus "Mule" Blackwell, 81 of Roanoke United States Air Force Retired went home to be with the Lord Saturday, April 4, 2015. He was born December 29, 1933 in Draper, N.C. (now Eden, N.C.) the son of the late Richard and Stella Mason Blackwell.
Mr. Blackwell retired after serving 20 years in the United States Air Force. Following his retirement from the Air Force he worked 22 years for Roanoke Electric Steel in the Hydraulic Maintenance Department.
Mule was a devoted family man, masterful storyteller, and loved to take his grandchildren on fishing trips.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth "Libby" M. Blackwell, daughters, Elizabeth "Beth" Smith and husband Paul, Jennifer Whyte and husband Barry, grandchildren, Tyler Smith and wife Christy, Chelsea Linton and husband Tom, and Benjamin Whyte, sister, Lorene Pruitt.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Hospice Program C/O the Veterans Administration Hospital 1905 Boulevard Salem, Va. 24153.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by Mr. Bill Overstreet. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
