William Eugene Bowling of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at age 81, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in 1930 in Bedford, Va., the youngest son of Thomas E. Bowling and Sally Saunders Bowling. He graduated in 1948 from Liberty High School in Bedford and served in the Army during the Korean War, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He worked 41 years for the phone company in its many iterations from C&P to Verizon, retiring in 1991. He was a devoted member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, and Clerk of the Session. He was predeceased by a brother, Cedric Bowling; and two sisters, Inez Bowling Lowry and Alise Bowling Wilkes Campbell. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances Stafford Bowling; by daughter and son-in-law, Sydney Bowling Duncan and Andy Duncan of Frostburg, Md.; and by a number of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at Simpson Funeral Home on Peters Creek Road. Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at Northminster Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church Capital Needs Fund, 3911 Greenland Ave., Roanoke, VA 24012.
