Joseph Douglas (Jay, J.D.) Thomas, 71, of Roanoke went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 6, 2011. He was born April 24, 1940 in Marion, Virginia a son of the late Douglas M. And Laire Trail Thomas. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a half brother and a half sister. Mr. Thomas was a devoted member of First Church of God and a longtime employee of Sears. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, June Thomas; daughter, Kathy Crockett of Dublin; son, Michael (Scotty) Thomas and wife Alice of Fishersville; grandsons, Wesley Brickey and Kyle Cook; great grandson, Cameron Brickey; brother, Roger Thomas and wife Jo of Troutville; sisters, Joan Bartley and husband Frank of Moneta; Charlotte Culbreth and husband Norman of Rock Hill, S.C.; half sister, Goldie Haynes of Martinsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Mission Fund C/O First Church of God 5008 Hildebrand Road Roanoke, Va. 24012. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011 at First Church of God by the Rev. Jim Milner. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. 366-0707
