Obituary of Margaret Hughes

Margaret Shively Nolen Hughes of Roanoke passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2011. She was born September 15, 1940 in Franklin County, Virginia to the late Garfield and Dorothy Shively. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Genice Renee Nolen, and Deborah Lynn Nolen and a daughter, Sherri Rae Nolen Cooper. Left to cherish her memory are: son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Kim Nolen; sister, Geraldine (Gerry) and husband Bobby Aldridge; brothers, Johnny and wife Beth Shively, Richard and wife Karen Shively; grandchildren, Duston, Desmond, Delilah, Destiny and Levi; nephews, John and wife Kathy Aldridge; Ritchie and wife Jennifer Shively; nieces, Sharon (Aldridge) and husband Glenn Parker; and Amanda (Shively) and husband Matthew Boettcher; special aunts, Nora Underwood and Eva Peters; friends at Pheasant Ridge, Dreamer Lovell and Nash Wright. Thanks to all of the staff and residents of Pheasant Ridge Assisted Living for their many acts of kindness shown to Margaret. The family would also like to express gratitude to the staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Neuro-Intensive Care Unit for their excellent services. Margaret was employed by the City of Roanoke for 25 years in various departments, retiring as a Deputy Sheriff. She was a member of New Life Christian Ministries. She loved people, had a fun personality and will always be remembered for he beautiful smile. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2011 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by Pastor Tony Atkinson and the Rev. Betty Davis. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Hale Family Cemetery in Franklin County. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
