Edward (Ed) L. Powers, Sr., 73, of Salem passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 30, 2011 after a long illness. He was born May 3, 1937 to the late Berta (King) and Raymond Blaneo Powers of Copper Hill, Va. He wa a 30 year retiree of AT & T/Alcatel-Lucent, beginning his telephone career with Chesapeake and Patomac in April of 1956. He served eight years in the U S Army Reserve and was an active member of the Virginians Gospel Quartet of Roanoke for almost 27 years. He was a caring husband, and father and loved much by all who knew him. He carried with him a legacy of unselfish devotion to his Lord, family, and friends. He was also preceded in death by his loving brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Raymond B. and Wilma Doris Powers of Roanoke. Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Brenda Alls Powers, two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward "Lincoln" Powers, Jr. and Kim of Cumming, Ga.; and Steven and Judy Whorley of Roanoke; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mickey and Margaret Scott of Goodview; Butch and Bonnie Alls of Roanoke; special nephews, Randy Powesrs and family of Raleigh, N.C.; Loren Powers and family of Switzerland and many wonderful grandchildren and nieces. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to Chosen People Ministries. A special thank you to our frineds and neighbors on Highland Road for their cards, prayers, and visits. Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 1, 2011 at First Wesleyan Church 3706 Peters Creek Road with the Rev. Ricardo Rodriguez officiating. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. 366-0707
