Evelyn Sigmon Akers, 93, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, J.D. and Melinda Smart Sigmon; sisters, Virta Angle, Ocie Owens, Jessie Stone, Eula Booth and Hazel Neeley; brother, Odell Sigmon; and her husband, Walter H. Akers. Mrs. Akers was a member of Bethany Christian Church. Surviving are her daughter, Elaine Arnold and husband, Victor, of Sugarland, Texas; grandchildren, Christopher Arnold and wife, Elizabeth, and Melinda Payne; great-grandchildren, Sydney Payne, Lara Payne, Vance Payne, and Christopher Eric Arnold; and nieces and nephews, Gordon Roger Booth, Sandra Parrish, Sonny Akers and Lula Mae Bower. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Bethany Christian Church, 3115 Fleming Avenue, Roanoke, Va. 24012. A Memorial Service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2011, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. Matthew Ricks. Interment will be private. A reception will follow the memorial service at Simpson Funeral Home, 540-366-0707.
