Obituary of Alvin Stump

Alvin L. (Al) Stump, 72, of Salem, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, November 14, 2010. A native of Roanoke Virginia, he graduated from Jefferson High School, and attended Roanoke College where he received a Bachelors Degree. He also attended Auburn University and received his Masters Degree from Pace University in New York City. He served in the Georgia National Guard for six years. He was employed by various insurance companies in New York, Alabama, and Virginia before being named a Vice President of Guerling Global Re-Insurance Company in New York City. In addition to his work in the insurance field, he also worked as a real estate broker in both New York City and Roanoke, Virginia; taught at the College of Insurance in New York, and at National Business School in Salem, Virginia, and for seven years he enjoyed serving as a substitute teacher at Roanoke's Patrick Henry High School. Like his father and grandfather, he took up art of watch repair in his spare time. He is survived by his wife, Rosalie Sutherland Stump; daughter, Wendy Lynn Stump Prescott and her husband, Donald Charles Prescott, of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a stepson, Samuel Sirlin, of Altadena, California; three step grandchildren, Steven lee Prescott, Cory Ann Prescott, and Ashlei Elizabeth Prescott; and a grand Airedal Terrier, Princess Arwen. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Animal Rescue League. A memorial service will be conducted 2pm on Saturday November 20, 2010, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke, 2015 Grandin Road, SW.
