Obituary of Irene Childers

Irene Kardos Childers, 87, of Roanoke, Va., passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 3, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Julia Kovach Kardos; brothers, John and Steve Kardos; and a sister, Julia Corse. Irene was a graduate of Kennett and Kennett School of Commerce and retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She attended Roanoke Valley Baptist Temple and was a former longtime and faithful member of Valley View Wesleyan Church. Surviving are her daughter, Charlotte Childers Taylor and husband, Jim, of Roanoke; sisters, Margaret Grant and Gladys Thurman, both of Roanoke; nephews, Johnny Kardos and wife, Joyce, Douglas Thurman and wife, Brenda, Jeffrey Thurman and wife, Diane; great-nieces, Angela Hughes and husband, Alf, Rebekah Thurman; great-nephews, Timothy and Brent Thurman and Steve Kardos. The family would like to thank the staff of Amedisys Hospice, especially Lisa and Ruth, for their care and compassion during Irene's illness. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Roanoke Rescue Mission. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. Terry Mabry. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
