Clarence A. Bottenfield, Jr., 81 of Salem, formerly of Staunton, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Thursday, February 9, 2012. Clarence was born on May 18, 1930 in Millboro Springs, Virginia, son of the late Jane and Clarence Bottenfield, Sr. of Churchville, Virginia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Betty F. Bottenfield; brother Carl Bottenfield and sister Lucille Koogler. Survivors are his daughters, Susan J. Bottenfield and Kay B. Wright, husband Carl and granddaughter, Tracy L. Wright; grandson, Adam Q. Wright and wife Leslie all of Roanoke; great grandson, Aiden J. Wright; siblings, Dorothy Buckholz, Mildred Doyle, Byran Bottenfield and wife Betty; Herman Bottenfield and wife Carol; sister-in-law Jackie Bottenfield;brother in law Frank Flesher and wife Helen and brother in law David Flesher, all whom were loved by Clarence and his family. Clarence was a graduate of Millboro High School class of 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy and served as Commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Waynesboro, Va. Flotilla # 82 before transferring to Flotilla # 81. He and his wife Betty volunteered to teach recreational boating safety courses and served in patrolling Virginia's inland waterways. Clarence retired from the Staunton Leader Newspaper and enjoyed over 18 years of blissful retirement. He was married to his beloved wife Betty for 59 years. He enjoyed Hunting, Fishing, Gardening, traveling in his RV, loved his family, being at home, and the warmth of his wood burning stove. Flowers may be sent to Suouthview United Methodist Church 3539 Peters Creek Road Roanoke, Va. A celebration of Clarence's life will be held at noon on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Southview United Methodist Church with Pastor Larry Edmonds officiating. Immediately following the service lunch will be provided in the church fellowship hall by the Southview United Methodist Women. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. The daughers welcome friends and family to their parent's home after the meal. We would like to recognize and give special thanks to Oncologist, Dr. Paul D. Richards and the nurses and staff at Blue Ridge Cancer Care, Lewis Gale, Salem, Va.
