Obituary of Stephen Hauck
Please share a memory of Stephen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Stephen (Joseph) Blake Hauck 61 died on Friday, September 3rd 2010 at home in Roanoke, Virginia after a heroic battle with leukemia. Steve was born in Jersey City, NJ. On November 24, 1948, son of the late Harry and Margaret Hauck. The youngest of 9 children, Steve grew up alongside several generations of Haucks, in a close knit, dynamic, and loving family. Above all else, Steve celebrated being a family man. He married the love of his life on October 12, 1975. His world was his family, and he was the world to them. Steve was a teacher; he taught his friends and family love of country, the significance of education, and the consequence of hard work. Steve joined the R.O.T.C. upon admittance to St. Peter's College (Jersey City, NJ.) in 1966. He was a member of the 1967 Pershing Rifle Team which won the 8th Regiment (National) Drill Meet Award that year. Upon graduation, Steve entered the Army as a commissioned officer of the 3rd infantry division. He proudly served his country between June 2, 1970 and November 10 1976, attaining the rank of Captain.
Steve had a love of knowledge and an encyclopedic mind. Steve earned his bachelor's degree in History from St. Peter's College in 1966. A decade later, he earned a Master of Public Service, in guidance from Western Kentucky University. Steve approached life from all ends, with the ultimate goals of understanding and reconciling the world before him. Steve's compassion, generosity, and a love for people informed a successful career at Procter and Gamble. A born salesman, Steve was an Account Executive for 32 years with the company. Steve lived by example, and P&G's slogan aptly describes the impact he left on his colleagues in the grocery business; "Touching lives, improving life." Above all else, Steve truly loved people. He lived a life of service, laughter, and gratitude and was a celebration of life.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Walter Hauck; three sisters, Mary Raimo and her husband Jerry, Nancy (Ann-Cecilia) Vogel and her husband Bill, and Gail Flanigan; a brother -in-law, Bill Moerler; sister-in-law, Joann Hauck. Left to cherish the memory of her beloved husband of 35 years, Sue (Mary Susanne) Hauck survives him, along with their devoted children and their spouses, Michelle Hauck Shaw and her husband Wes, and Thomas Edward Hauck and his wife Sara. He is also survived by a brother, Harry Hauck; three sisters, Margaret Moerler, Sister, Mary Emmanuel Hauck, and Katie (Catherine) Jereza and her husband Ramon; brother-in-law Dick (Richard) Flanigan and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. The family thanks the oncology nurses and doctors at Lewis Gale Medical Center and Duke University Hospital, who returned, with equal ferocity, the inspiration, optimism, and love of Steve's fight, and life. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Catholic Church 10:00am Thursday, September 9th 2010. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a memorial may be donated to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Arrangements handled by Simpson Funeral Home and Crematory, 366-0707.
