Alfred Hawkins Cregger, 89, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 17, 2014. He looked forward to joining his wife Mary, whom he shared 63 years of love, his parents William F. Cregger and Alie R. Cregger, infant sister, stepmother Bertie Cregger, brothers, James Crigger and William F. Cregger, Jr. He is survived by his sister, Mabel Toms, and his children, Ginger Meadows (Ed), Ann Steele (Jerry), Jim Cregger (Karen), and Janet Harris (Gary), along with seven grandchildren (Tammy, Tim, Ailee, Amanda, Melanie, Ben, and Alex) and seven great-grandchildren (Eliana, Abigail, Cloe, Kaelyn, Elijah, Isaiah, and Jonah). Al served in the Marines for 13 years, in the Pacific during World War II, and in the Korean War, before serving an additional 9 years in the Air Force, retiring with distinction in 1966. After retiring from the armed force, he enjoyed working as a campus policeman at Hollins College for 23 years. The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care provided by the staffs at the Virginia Veterans Care Center and the 4H wing of the VA Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Virginia Veterans Care Center, Westminster Presbyterian Church, or the charity of your choice in his name. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 19, 2014 from 3-5 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 20 at 11 a.m. at Simpson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Kyle Ferguson officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
