Obituary of Rachel Whitmire

Rachel M. "Cookie" Whitmire 76 of Roanoke went to be with the Lord on Tuesday July 29, 2014. Her parents, Rachel W. and Wade E. Whitmire; four brothers and one sister, Joe, Edward, Davy, Linwood, and Sue Whitmire preceded her; along with two step sisters, Frances Haislip and Anna Wiggington. Ms. Whitmire retired after 40 years of service as a Health Clerk with the Roanoke County Health Department. She dedicated her adult life to Edgewood Christian Church and was a charter member. Every time the doors were open, she was there, playing the piano or volunteering her time, helping one way or another. Always putting others first, she also dedicated herself to being a loving caregiver to her parents and to her brother and sister, Joe and Sue. While our hearts are heavy at this time, we all know God has a special plan for all of us. Left to cherish her memory are a special sister-in-law, Dot Whitmire; and niece, Brenda Trent; a very dear friend for 58 plus years, Hazel Newman and her sisters; along with several nieces, nephews, and friends. Family would like to thank the fourth floor staff of the Richfield Recovery and Care Center for all their care and support, along with the loyal members of her church for their friendship and coming to visit while at Richfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Roanoke Office, 3959 Electric Road, Roanoke, Va. 24018. A funeral service celebrating Ms. Whitmire's life will be held 11:00am Friday, August 1, 2014 in Simpson Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Atkin officiating. Interment will follow in the Fair View Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Thursday July 31, 2014 from 5:00-8:00pm at the funeral home.
