Obituary of Janice Thompson

Janice Wood Thompson, aged 93, died in Salem, VA on July 8, 2014. Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. Thompson, and is survived by her twin sister, Lucille Cribb of Troutville, VA, her daughter, Trish Perdue of Sterling, VA, and many family members and friends around the world. Janice grew up in the Eagle Rock VA area. She was raised in a woman-headed household, where she learned both generosity and frugality, resilience and thoughtfulness. Always extroverted, Janice participated in many school activities. Janice and Howard, high school sweethearts, married in 1942. The couple settled in the Roanoke area and formed many friendships and ties to the community. They shared a love of plants and gardening, and spent many happy hours outside, digging in the dirt. After retirement, the couple became "snowbirds," spending winter months in Florida, Arizona or California. Janice usually returned with cacti, rocks, shells and beautiful bare branches as mementos. Over the years, Janice was an avid reader, bridge player, garden-clubber, and volunteer for community organizations. She enjoyed shopping at Roanoke's downtown farmers' market and was a great cook, always happy to set an extra place for guests. Janice had a smile and kind word for everyone -- she approached every stranger as a potential friend. Proudly traditional and "proper," she also quietly exhibited extraordinary flexibility and grace navigating life's challenges and changes over the years. The family is deeply grateful to the kind and skilled care provided by staff of The Oaks at Richfield, and Good Samaritan Hospice. In accordance with Janice's wishes, cremation has taken place; arrangements were entrusted to Simpson Funeral Home & Crematory. Those who wish to act in remembrance of Janice on any given day are encouraged to plant a flower, read a good book, relish a juicy garden-grown tomato, chat with a friend, or say a kind word to a stranger.
