Betty Gray Comer Farmer, 87, of Roanoke went peacefully to meet her Lord on Friday, May 30, 2014. She was born March 30, 1927, to the late Paul and Thelma Comer of Rich Creek, Virginia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jack Farmer; brother, Russell Comer, and son, Larry Farmer. She is survived by her children, Betty Hungate of Roanoke; Bill (Bonnie) Farmer of Ridgeway; George (Rosemary) Farmer of Mechanicsville; Gayle (Patrick) McDonald of Roanoke; Anne (Steve) Allen of Fredericksburg. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and a brother, Paul (Barbara) Comer, III of Knoxville, Tenn. Betty graduated from National Business College, and later married Jack Farmer of Mayodan, N.C. She worked for the Roanoke City Department of Parks and Recreation; then went to work for First National Exchange Bank. She was a charter member of Preston Oaks Baptist Church and was their first pianist and organist. After moving to Knoxville, Tenn. she was a faithful and devoted member of Central Baptist Church, where she served as financial secretary for 16 years, and was their first woman deacon. Music was an important part of her life and she shared her sweet spirit of song with her friends at Elm Park Estates and Our Lady of the Valley. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Terry Mabry will officiate. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
