Bettie (Grandma) Ellis Staples 82 of Salem went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, April 2, 2014. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, John William and Dollie Mae Ellis, brother, John Ellis, Jr. and a niece Linda Ellis. Mrs. Staples retired from the V A Medical Center in Salem and was a member of CommUnity Church. Surviving are her children, Butch Staples and wife Mary, Cindy Collins, Ann Fink and husband Dennis, Sherry Harmon; grandchildren, Meagan, Simon, Jamie, Patrick, Emily, L.J., Jason, Jared, Amanda, Brian, and Amy; eight great grandchildren; brothers, Sammy Ellis and wife Jane; Robert Ellis and wife Lynne; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Cure PSP Foundation (Progressive Supranuclear Palsey) 30 E. Padonia Road Suite 201 Timonium, MD 21903 or to CommUnity Church 901 Russell Drive Salem, Va. 24153. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road Pastor Tom McCracken. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707.
