Obituary of Bernard Darden James

Bernard Darden "Bill" James, 81, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Frank and Lena May Garst James; brothers, Herman Frank James and Robert Garland James; sisters, Dorothy Elizabeth Bussey and Frances Evelyn James; and one niece, Sue James Secrist. Surviving are his wife, Odell Ratliff James; a son, Richard D. James and wife, Mary; daughters, Deborah L. Markwood and her husband, Tom, Carolyn J. Pollash and her husband, George, and Kerry J. Wright; two stepsons, Jeffrey D. Duncan and his wife, Peyton, and Michael E. Duncan and his wife, Michele; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Whitlow James. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church or to the Roanoke Rescue Mission. The family will receive friends at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2012. The Funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, 2012, at St. James Episcopal Church, 4515 Delray St. NW, Roanoke, Va. Interment will follow at the Old Peters Creek Cemetery in Roanoke.
