I was student at Northside, youth director at Southview, Associate Pastor at Southview and co-pastor at Genesis. Because of this my life intersected with Shirley several times.
The one constant during the time was her caring/giving nature with others. She will be missed by many.

Shirley was an awesome neighbor and friend. We were blessed to call her both. She was a big part of our little community, she was one of kind, she knew everyone here and they knew her, she always had a kind word and one of the biggest hearts of anyone I know..she will be greatly missed here. May she rest in peace and condolences to her family.

Miss Gregory was a fantastic teacher and I'll always remember her classes. Presently I would run into her shopping at Kroger and she remembered me and her times at a Howard Johnson's restaurant. God Speed Miss Gregory, Rest in Peace.

Gregory Family,
I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Gregory as a teacher at Northside. She was truly an inspiration to me and to her students. She never forgot her students and
recently at the mall when we met she always wanted
to know what I was doing after graduation and where I
went to college and what I was doing. She always was
interested in her students and their lives beyond graduation. She was in all sense of the word an
educator. She will be missed. May you Rest in Peace.
Sincerely,
Doretta Winter

In the tapestry of life, Shirley was a vibrant thread woven with kindness and intellect. Her delightful presence, akin to the unexpected sweet goodies she left at our doors, will be dearly missed. With her thoughtful gestures and selfless heart, she transformed our hearts. As we embrace this loss, may her kindness forever resonate in each of us. Her memory persistently inspires us to cherish those around us more dearly.

In January of 1967, my Radford College student teaching began at Northside High School. I had majored in mathematics and minored in government. My assignment at Northside was to teach a Mathematics 8 class with Mrs. Sue Yates supervising, an Algebra I class with Mr. Dwight Shober supervising, and a senior Government class with Ms. Shirley Gregory supervising. My thoughts of teaching eighth grade mathematics and algebra did not scare me too much. But the thought of teaching seniors in a government class was petrifying for two reasons. The government students were very close to my own age and I did not feel as confident teaching government class material as I did in teaching mathematics.
When I first observed my mathematics supervisors teach a class, all seemed normal. Then I walked into the government class. I took a seat in the back of the classroom. Ms. Gregory began her lecture with no visible notes, just steady instruction, interactions with students, and walking in front of the room. Suddenly Ms. Gregory dropped her right elbow on her desk, bent sideways, and kept on talking and gesturing with her left hand. In a few minutes, she walked toward the classroom windows. Under the windows was a small table about two feet tall. My eyes nearly popped-out of my head, when Ms. Gregory again leaned over, way down, to put her elbow on that low table and kept on lecturing. I certainly knew that I would never be able to lecture and contort myself as Ms. Gregory did!
Mrs. Shirley Gregory loved teaching. She was famous for her wealth of knowledge, her interest in current events, her rapport with, care for, and interest in her students, and her agility.
Ms. Gregory was an unforgettable and awesome mentor!

I am shocked to hear this news. Shirley was my neighbor for many years. She was my mom's neighbor before that. We always watched out for each other. She loved to pick on me about my husband always doing all the work! I will miss you Shirley. Rest in peace dear lady.

I was so fortunate to have Ms Gregory in 1970-1971 at Northside. She was so kind & dedicated to teaching & adored her students. She wanted us to succeed & went out of her way to help us do just that. Even after I grew older, she always knew me & called me by my real name, & remembered she also taught my daughter Kealy. She loved that she taught us both. I enjoyed bumping into her at Kroger & her enthusiasm & energy never diminished. Rest well dear lady....job well done. Nila "Sandy" Wilson

Ms. Gregory was one of those teachers that will always leave a lasting memory in my life. Whether it be from helping her clean the chalkboard, hearing stories of her beloved cat Thomas, talking to me about when she taught my mom to test prep day, she was a wonderful individual that loved teaching and her students. Such an incredible career at Northside and probably one for the record books not only there but for all of Virginia. May she rest in peace.

The world has lost a dear, dear career teacher who spent her life caring for her students and then keeping up with them into adulthood. I will treasure all of the cards and notes she sent me once I moved away from the area. Miss Gregory was a kind teacher who loved learning and reading herself and wanted her students to be successful in learning. She will be missed by her previous students, her neighbors, and her church community.

Ms Gregory was one of my all time favorite teachers at Northside. I went to Williamsburg and purchased a Pewter drummer boy small statue from a gift shop gave it to her as a gift. She always remembered that years later and was so grateful that she had it. Ms. Gregory will be missed by so many people. It was a pleasure to know her and have her as a teacher.

As a very intelligent, energetic, and thoughtful lady and teacher, she will be missed by so, so many people in the Roanoke Valley! After visiting her on many occasions, we were always amazed at her knowledge and she always sent us home with a treat. On these visits, when we arrived, the first thing she would ask is "what books are we reading"?
