Obituary of Philip Randolph Hylton, Sr.

Philip Randolph Hylton, Sr., born January 15, 1935, in Roanoke, Virginia, went to be with the Lord Jesus, on January 29, 2024, at 8:18 am. Some knew Philip as “Florida Phil”, “Roanoke Man”, “Daddyo”, “Mr. Phil”, or his birth name nickname “Skeeter”. He left the world as the editor of the “Hylton Herald” (a news and entertainment letter he put out for most of his adult life). Philip Randolph “Skeeter” Hylton was many things, but none more important than his role as a Christ follower. His life was and will always be a witness to all who met him as to how to love and follow Jesus.

Skeeter was preceded in his eternal reward by his parents Walter and Essie Hylton; brother, Geno Hylton; and sister, Peggy Lewis.

Phil is survived by his brother, Chic Hylton and wife Pat Hylton; son, Randy Hylton and wife Laura Hylton; granddaughters, India Delp and husband Hunter Delp,  Shannan Ouwerkerk and husband Kevin Ouwerkerk; great-grandchildren, Asilyn, Hadley, Wyait Delp, and Xaiver Ouwerkerk; Uncle Phil was uncle to Mark Taylor, Jay, Brad, Steve Lewis, Christine Hylton; as well as their significant others, Brenda Taylor, Michelle Lewis, Rocio Lewis and Jennifer Lewis; as well as numerous friends and family too many to mention.

Florida Phil, served in Northside Baptist Church in Florida for several years before returning to Roanoke, Virginia in 1988. Roanoke Man, wrote his Hylton Herald and “wrote and co-wrote” with brother Chic, several books of their life and times as well poetry and limericks, many of which can be found on Amazon. Mr. Phil also helped to create and manage several fantasy football and racing leagues, over the last few years from 1992 till the present. He was and is the co-creator of one of the first fantasy football and racing leagues in our time, he used one of the first PC’s for this purpose: pre-internet.  As Daddyo, Grand Daddy, and Uncle Phil, we fondly remember him as a Christ Jesus Follower, son, brother, uncle, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, historian, writer of letters, poems, current and historical events, teller of tall tales, and collector and teller of clean jokes. Daddyo loved the Tampa Bay Football, local hockey, fantasy sports, his family, and all of you who knew and corresponded with him (not necessarily in that order). He drank his coffee 3 cups 1 at a time and was early to bed and early to rise. Sausage Gravy Biscuits and chopped steak or chicken fingers and fries didn’t stand a chance when placed in front of Daddyo. He dedicated his life to Jesus, his Saturdays, were for his only son Ran, and his remaining time to his family and friends.

Please remember Daddyo’s happiness and willingness to accept everything that this life presented to him! Please welcome Jesus into your life on a daily basis.

The family will receive friends Friday February 9, 2024 from 4-6 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home, Peters Creek Road Chapel. Interment will be private for the family.
