Obituary of Gearldine "Jerry" (McKee) Hanes Ramey

Gearldine “Jerry” (McKee) Hanes Ramey, 99, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2023. She was born on September 2, 1924, the fourth child of Florence and Alec McKee. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son (Steven Hanes), husband (Fisher Ramey), siblings (Walter McKee, Wanda Copley, Charles McKee and Anna Place), and several nieces and nephews.

 

A native of Fort Gay, WV, Jerry grew up in the Sciotoville/Wheelersburg, OH area. She raised her son in Portsmouth, OH where she was a cosmetologist. After working in a beauty shop downtown for many years, she opened Jerry’s Beauty Shop attached to her home on Thomas Avenue.  She married Fisher in 1966 and they enjoyed 32 years together. Jerry was a dedicated fan of The Ohio State University Buckeyes football team. She enjoyed watching games and would always say, “We will forgive them all else if they will just beat Michigan.”

 

Jerry will be missed and remembered by her daughter-in-law Patti Cheney Hanes, granddaughter Lexi Hanes Dibbern and her husband Matthew, great-grandchildren Chas and Kate Dibbern, granddaughter Getra Hanes Selph and her husband Steven, stepdaughter Kay Smith, as well as many nieces and nephews. She loved her family and her Lord with all of her heart.

 

The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to the Serenity Cottage team at Richfield Living and to Good Samaritan Hospice for the excellent care and compassionate support they provided to Jerry. A celebration of Jerry’s life will be planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice in Roanoke, VA.
