All my best childhood memories have Dawn in them. I was blessed that Dawn was my cousin. It seems we were always together, at church, at school, at each other's houses.
When we were very young we used to call for each other at the front door of our houses instead of knocking. She would call/sing Kel-el-lee at my door and I would call Daw-awn-nee at hers when I wanted her to come out to play. We had many sleepovers together, I remember one time where she kept me up all night, so I could hear her new favorite song on the radio. We never did hear the song she wanted me to hear but Knock 3 Times on the Ceiling if you Love Me played and that was a close second, and she finally let me sleep. Dawn taught me how to play "Cheater", how to water ski and to sail out at their cottage. Our sailing was going great just the 2 of us with the wind, but we needed to be rescued getting back across the lake. Oh, how I loved swimming in the pool inside Dawn's house, but I think Dawn had grown tired of it, so one day when I wanted to swim, Dawn thought the water was too cold for her, so she hooked up a hose to the hot water in the laundry room, just to warm it up a little. Unfortunately, we went back upstairs for a while and forgot about the water. We never did get to swim that day, but got in lots of trouble for flooding 2 levels of the basement. There are so many more memories I could share. I loved Dawn my whole life. The last time I saw Dawn was in August, 2 months before she died, we had a nice visit, we talked, we cried and we prayed together, as I was leaving Dawn with as more volume than I had heard from her during the visit, she called Kel-el-lee to me and I responded with Daw-awn-nee back.

My sincere condolences to Bob and family.
Dawn was a friend and coworker at BRAAC.
She was a devoted wife to Bob and to her family and church.
She was also an educator who gave off herself to the school and especially her students. They loved her for her kind manner and determination for each of them to succeed
She was dear to me because of her kindness and true concern for those around her.
She fought the battle with her disease and never once gave up hope but knew God had a plan for her. She was a Christian and believed she would eternally be with her lord and savior and with her daughter in heaven.
She has peace now in heaven and I miss her.
Love, Lucy Henderson.

As a sit here and try to think of something to write, I find it very difficult to say anything because the thought of losing this precious friend is overwhelming me with grief and sadness. We shared so many fun times together for many many years and so it would be impossible to share just one memory, but what I would like to share is the fact that Dawn made me a better person because of her kind and sweet heart. She inspired me to trust in the love of our Savior. Yes, her faith was tested many times, but she always knew that she would be with her Lord and Savior and her beautiful daughter someday. She was so easy to be with and to love. I will miss this special friend forever ❣️

Dawn, my sister my friend. You were in both my weddings. We shared our passion for Christian music. I loved our visits together when you'd come to Florida. I was so proud of you for truly showing your Chritian values by your actions until the end. It broke my heart to see you hanging on during your suffering because you didn't want to leave all our loved ones that have turned from Salvation and you were afraid you won't see them again in heaven. I am so happy you're out of your suffering and singing with our loved ones. Wear that Crown with Glory!

Dawn, you have been my best friend forever. I remember when we first met in Lafayette and ended up in my apartment eating spaghettios with Nathan and Megan. On New Years Eve you always made lobster and prime rib ( best cook ever- good thing Bob learned from you) and whatever mornings we had free were spent at Bob Evan’s and you got grits- never understood that. We did a lot in the 3 years you were there. Oh yeah, going to Children’s museum in Indy and who could forget the Springsteen concert! You always managed to bring out the best in me.
You guys moved to Maryland and we came to visit. You took me on the metro and we walked to ALL the memorials in DC ( it was so hot and the kids were exhausted). Loved Ocean City.
When you came to New Albany we did touristy things and I do remember the bug down my shirt. Bob had to put Megan’s bike back together as Steve had done it wrong and then he put the girls swingset up!
You were always strong, thoughtful, and kind. Your actions always humbled me. You had the best laugh. You were the best person. I hate the illness you had and how you suffered. I was so happy to spend time with you a few weeks before you passed. I know you are with our Lord and suffering no more. I miss you.

As Dawn’s sister I have so many wonderful memories. I couldn’t have asked for A better more loving sister. When I would get grounded as a teen she would tell our father she was afraid to go to the laundry mat alone. So he would let me out of the house to go with her & we would go out for lunch, or just hang out at her house while the clothes were washing. I always stayed a lot longer than it took. As we got older we took many trips to Florida. Just us two girls & our kids singing to the radio the whole way. When the kids got older they turned into mother daughter trips to the beach. We all loved the beach. Every time we got together we had so much fun. I can’t count how many times we laughed so hard that we would wet our pants. I will always miss you Dawn.

Dawn, I had the absolute honor and pleasure of knowing you for many years. Your sweet and kind manner was always an inspiration to me, and I will always admire your courageous spirit.
We’ve had some fun trips together, but my most memorable was our trip to the Packer’s game in 2019. I was thrilled to be in the gang that watched the game from the suite. That truly was the funnest time I’ve had during a game. You never got annoyed with my obnoxiousness, even though most people would’ve told me to shut up and sit down. You rolled with it and joined in!
You will be missed…

Dawn took me under her wing when I was in second grade. I will never forget visiting the lake house with her to celebrate Lori's graduation party. Lori was my teaching assistant, and I was so thankful because I had a terrible teacher. The Hess girls came to my rescue. I always think of Dawn when I hear Fleetwood Mac. Keep on singing Songbird; we will miss you.

Awwe so sad...My memories of all of you "kids" are still fresh in my mind! I remember when I came into the family, I was 10 years old, and you all WERE my family! How sad as you grow older how you lose contact with people that were so very important part of your life. Being part of the Hess family is when I met amazing friends at Lakeshore Tabernacle and learned about Gods love. My love to all and our prayers to help with healing through this sad time. On a note.... First time I met "FLOWER" their pet skunk, at 11, I helped out with the kids and I told Milt and Judy, “you mean I have to watch her too”???? I wish we could get those years back. Miss you all so much....Cheryl & Jim (aka Aunt Cheryl) Cheryl Brown

There are so many wonderful memories of Dawn through the years. I remember her first car, an ugly green thing that she plowed into a snowbank. And the time she got a ticket for "illegal riding". Her brother Mark was hanging out the window - when she went to court, she had to explain to the judge what the police officer considered "illegal riding". When she graduated from high school I remember the look on her face when we presented her with a new little Pacer car full of balloons.
She was full of spirit and always ready to play a fun joke on someone.
Our trip to Africa with Dawn & Amy was very special. Dawn was so full of kindness and compassion, especially when it came to children. Dawn's attributes rubbed off on Amy. It was a joy to watch them both with the African children. On the last leg of the trip, we were in London and Amy wanted a piece of Strawberry pie. The restaurant would not cut the pie for one slice so Dawn looked kindly at the waitress and said "I'll take the whole pie".

We were cousins and Dawn was definitely one of my faves. Her family lived a few houses down the street from us and I remember walking her to school on her first day of Kindergarten holding hands. We played together a lot. Then they moved away to a big house with an indoor pool! Boy did we have fun in that pool. That was such a cool house, it had 5 levels. Everyone loved that house on Harding Road in Kenosha. I remember being so sad when Bob and Dawn moved away from Kenosha. One year we took a short vacation with Bob and Dawn and my sister and her husband to Myrtle beach. We had a wonderful time chatting in the Jacuzzi and playing cards. After Dawn was diagnosed with MSA, my sister, daughter and I flew out to spend some time with her that summer. We had some special times and lots of laughs with Dawn, her mom and Nathan's family. She was a very special person and will be missed so much. ❤️

My Aunt Dawn was a beautiful person- inside and out. Growing up I always felt she had tremendous class and elegance. She was an inspiration to so many. I remember fun summers spent working alongside her at Vacation bible school and just spending time as a family. The last conversation I had with her we talked about the reunion her and my mom would have in Heaven… what a beautiful sight it would be.
I love you Aunt Dawn. Thank you for being another mother to me growing up. You are more appreciated than you know.

Growing up the cousins were very close. uncle Milt had a cottage out at Twin Lakes he would let us kids come out and enjoy. I remember playing War with Dawn, Lori and Lisa. (The boys didn’t usually play) and listening to Karen Carpenter sing “Close to you”. One of my favorite memories in hiding in the bushes during “kick the can” and laughing so hard we both peed our pants! I didn’t get to spend a lot of time with her as we got older and our paths separated but I will always remember her as that beautiful, fun, caring teenager I grew up with. God bless.

I’m Not sure if it’s normal to remember being 3 or 4 years old, but I swear I do. I have so many memories of Aunt Dawn over the years but my favorites are as a little kid in Crofton, MD. I see young Dawn teaching me and Amy, snacks in the kitchen, lots of giggles and hideous furniture. I’ve seen lots of photos of us all together from trick or treating to lounging. Not sure if some of these memories are channeled through photos but every one involving Aunt Dawn is always a pleasant one. She had a power to bring out the best in someone. As a younger boy I remember her telling me to smile more. As an adult I remember her wanting me to be happy and smile but now Inquiring about life and always providing encouragement.
I love you Aunt Dawn. Say Hello to my childhood bestie Amy
-Justin “Bur Baby”
PS
4/13/2023 on Finley’s birthday I told her she could be late to school we could hit breakfast or anything she wanted to do on the way and she said
“I want to go see Aunt Dawn”
I thought this to be an odd random request but obviously would not object to and we had an amazing visit. We said many goodbyes and even though Finley does not know at her age, I Feel she chose that answer to give her and I another chance to speak because she knew how important she was to me.

I met Dawn a few years ago while I was assisting her step-dad. Thru her mom Judy I was able to have the honor and pleasure helping her. In that short period of time that I’ve known her, I knew how wonderful a person she was. Even in pain you would see her smile and we would sometimes gang up on Bob, joking around. Watching them together you would know how much they love and adore each other. I will truly miss her.
