Maxine, Duane, Stimus and family. I have been out of town and was just reading the past weeks newspapers. Having you all as neighbors in Country Club Estates was a pleasure. I have been living at Smith Mtn. Lake for the past 33 yrs. Sherrill stopping his car or truck in the middle of the road to talk to me was always a "hoot"!! The apple & egg fights with the boys from West Club Forest on Halloween with Duane & the other guys helping me out would have been something that Sherrill would have enjoyed taking park in. Maxine, thanks for helping take care of my mother at Richfield. All of you are invited to Dowdyville at the lake anytime. Bruce Dowdy brucedowdy@aol.com 540 420 5544

Heaven gained another good man! Sherrill, DA as I affectionately called him (if you know you know), it was an honor to get to share a wonderful evening back in July together, with you and Maxine, at the NWTF Banquet. We have never laughed so hard as we did that night…..ha! It’s a memory I’ll never forget and one I’ll cherish forever! This is not a goodbye but simply a “see you later”. You were a hoot DA and we are going to have so much fun in heaven when G, Maxine and I join you one day. Now that dinner table in heaven will never be the same…..that’s for sure…..ha…ha! Until then, we love you brother, and anxiously await our reunion!

I met Sherrill about 3 years ago at the Community Horse Show after I joined the board of Roanoke Valley Horsemen's Association. I knew he was a character from the moment I spotted him and we started talking. He enjoyed poking fun at me and this never changed. I reciprocated and always looked forward to seeing him. He always put a smile on my face. I wish I had known him long before then but I'm certain that would not have changed a thing about our friendship. What a wonderful, funny and generous man. I will miss him so much and will always remember him with great fondness. He broke the mold.

After talking to family and friends here about Sherrill, I am amazed at how he touched the lives of so many people. Every single person I talked to had their own funny story to tell about him. My sisters were telling me stories about my dad's visits from Sherrill when he was living with us in Catawba. I remember him asking me, "When is that cowboy friend of yours coming over again?" He touched the lives of all of my kids. We will all miss him terribly! Much love to you, Maxine, and your family.

Sonja and family,
We are so sorry for your loss. Your dad was always so gracious whenever we would stay at your parents' house. I truly enjoyed our stay and the things we did with your parents. We hope you find comfort and peace in your memories in the days and years to come. We are praying for the family.
With love and condolences,

True friend and supporter of all the events Carey and I did. Salem Fair, Roanoke Valley Horse Show. He also was a pillar of this community. We could disagree, argue, and go drink a beer after. His help and assistance through the years will never be forgotten. He loved our city. Just a true, authentic man. Thank you Sir for everything.

Being the younger of the Smith Cousins, I always looked up to Sherrill. My mother wanted to name me Sherrill after my father's middle name, Aunt Mary got there first. I'm so glad that Sherrill came along before me.
Summer jobs working for Leonard Smith Sheet Metal and Roofing are (now) fondly remembered. Included is a photo of Sherrill and my first dog Tweeps taken in Pearisburg in 1948

There is absolutely not enough room to write all of the memories experienced with Sherrill. He and I were thick as thieves in high school. Band activities were where we first met. Sherrill and I became close friends during that time and I later went to work for his father. Leonard was like a second father to me. After high school, we continued to stay close. It seems as if both of us having children seemed to cause us to not be as close as we had once been, but I always considered Sherrill one of my BEST friends. He was always someone I could trust and know that he would treat me like a true friend.
His passing will remain as a sadness in my heart. Our prayers are with his family at this time.
Happy trails my friend!
