"We shall go forward together. The road upwards is stony. There are upon our journey dark and dangerous valleys through which we have to make and fight our way. But it is sure and certain that if we persevere – and we shall persevere – we shall come through these dark and dangerous valleys into a sunlight broader and more genial and more lasting than mankind has ever known." Winston Churchill, Leeds, 16 May 1942

I did most of my growing up on Crutchfield Street in the house next door to the Rakes family. They were the best neighbors! And Mary Lou was the sweetest, kindest, and most gracious person. In a way, she was like a second mom for many of us kids.
I am saddened by her death, but I carry her memory and love in my heart.
My condolences to all the family and many, many friends fortunate enough to have known her.

I read of Mrs. Rakes' passing in the paper today and wanted to share my condolences to her family. The line about her being an influence on so many children in her life is so true. I remember all the ways she touched my life growing up- from Sunday school, Cub Scouts, Bible school, church dinners, greetings for me in the neighborhood or when playing ball with Butch. She always treated me (and every kid) with a smile and a genuine interest in how I was doing. The last time I saw her she was at the church, serving snacks and kindness at my mother's funeral, looking the same as she did when we made those shoeshine boxes in her kitchen for Cub scouts sometime in the 1960's (mine is still in the garage, my name and Pack 209 still brightly painted on the side). I'm sure she is getting together with my mom and all those beautiful Northview Methodist women- still planning, praying, and serving. Peace and love to all who remember Mrs. Rakes. Dave Hudgins

Our hearts ache with the Rakes family and friends at the passing of this wonderful woman. We pray for comfort and peace in the days ahead! We love you all!
MaryLou…You welcomed our family in as your own when our son Jonathan fell in love with your granddaughter Morgan and married into your beautiful family! We felt your love from the start! It’s only been a few years but you made it feel like we’d always been a part of your life! We so enjoyed each conversation with you and the fellowship we shared! You are forever in the hearts of all who knew you…we are so very honored and grateful to have been among those who now still hold you close! We will see you in paradise dear MaryLou…
Love never ends…Paul and Shiela Thorne

Q: What will you never forget about Mary Lou?
A: I will remember fondly how thoughtful and inclusive Mary Lou was. She made sure I had a bridal and baby shower at her home.
Being her cousin was special; she always opened her home to me and my family.
I loved her very much,
Sandy McMinnis
