I was pastor to the Ayers family. It seemed almost every time I visited, Bobby had a fascination with my goatee. One time he made the statement if he hadn't been shaved, we would look the same. I only knew Bobby after he had already suffered his stroke, but I still got very attached to him. The entire Ayers family is such a blessing and I consider them friends.

Bobby and Phyllis, and their family have always held a special place in my heart, as I was one of Karen Ayers’ teachers at West End School and just loved them all. I am in California on vacation and just found out about Bobby’s passing. I am so glad Bobby is “whole” again and in Heaven with Karen and our Lord Jesus Christ. Love and prayers for you all.

For me, Bobby, Phyllis and family were always a part of my life and memories from Hollins Road Church of the Brethren. His love for Christ and his family are the things I remember most. I loved seeing him hold Karen’s hand or look proudly at his girls (and son!) When the city built the trash train to take garbage to the landfill, he and I talked endlessly about Norfolk and Southern and their role in that venture. I so remember later giving him one of the NS railroad whistles from the grand opening. Even though I live in Florida now, I am blessed to see social media posts from his family. I know how very proud he is of all of you. I know Karen was waiting at heaven’s gate to welcome him home. All my love to your family. I can only imagine how much you will miss him. He is the same age as my parents, who I am blessed to still have in my life. May wonderful memories help sustain you. Your family is in my prayers.
