Obituary of Bernice Smith Clement

Bernice Virginia Smith Clement, 90, of Roanoke, Virginia passed away on Friday, August 19, 2022. Born October 25, 1931, in Newcastle, Virginia, Bernice was preceded in death by her father William H. Smith, her mother Mary Jane Damewood Smith, her stepmother Dorothy Smith, her sisters Leona Harrison and Mary Jane Lipscomb, and her brother Warren Smith.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years George Clement, her five children—Michael (Mary) Clement, Donna West, Judy (Terry) Tabor, William (LaDonna) Clement, and Elaine Carr—eleven grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren along with generations of people who were unrelated but made to feel like family.

Bernice was a seamstress and an active member of Hollins Road Church of the Brethren. She loved flowers, crocheting, and she hosted her family for Sunday lunch every week up until her passing.

Pastors Harold Boyd and Horace Light will officiate a celebration of Bernice’s life at Hollins Road Church of the Brethren on Saturday, August 27 at 2 pm with calling hours preceding at 1 pm.
