Obituary of Mary Virginia Broughton

Mary Virginia Broughton, 87, went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 4, 2022. She was the daughter of Powell and Elizabeth Newsom. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Talmadge “Tal” F. Broughton, and is survived by a loving family including two sons, Mark Talmadge Broughton (Sandy) and Bradley Powell Broughton (Christine); 12 grandchildren, Aaron (Julia), David (Leila), Paige (Luke), Peter (Nichole), Elizabeth (Ryne), Mary (Robbie), Julia (Tyler), Rachel (Jaison), Rebekah (Eliel), Samuel, Hannah (Maria) and Abigail (Jonathan); and by ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Ann Humphries (Jim); niece, Susan Humphries; and by her best friend and neighbor, Craig Powers.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at age 16 and made her witness for the Lord a central focus of her entire life. Christ was her anchor and security, and she never stopped striving to know Him and to make Him known.

Mary Virginia grew up in Salisbury, NC where she attended Boyden High School where she was a majorette with the marching band. Grandchildren fondly remember “Grammy” showing off her baton-twirling skills well into her 70s! She graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC.

As a longtime resident of Virginia Beach and later Daleville, Mary Virginia heavily invested her time, energy and love into all her grandchildren – special get-away trips, “Grammy School,” family gatherings, and more – resulting in a lifetime of wonderful memories. She was a bold witness for Christ and longed for His return. She also had an abiding love for Israel and its people. Right up until her passing, her vivacious spirit, care for others, sharing of her time and possessions, and her love for the Lord were on display and will be greatly missed by us all.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 13^th, from 3:00-4:00pm at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Rd, Roanoke, VA 24019.  

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, August 14^th, at 2pm at Faith Alliance Church located at 7505 Barrens Road, Roanoke, VA 24019.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Alliance Church.
