Karen, Britt, Lindsay and Family,
I've sat down to write this at least a half dozen times--and each time been unable to complete my thoughts as this loss is so profound. George was quite literally one of the finest people that I have ever known. He was my Teacher, my Mentor, my Sounding-board, my Trouble-shooter, my Friend, and most importantly--my Brother in Christ.
George had the unique ability to make everyone he spoke with, feel as if they were the most important person in his world in that moment. When I was a Senior at Roanoke College, Dr. Fintel made an appearance in Olin Hall while George and I were talking. George simply said "Hey Dr. Fintel--give me just a minute" and he continued his conversation with me and put THE PRESIDENT on hold! Who does that?? George does. He was no respecter of persons--because he respected everyone.
When my Mother passed away in December--George came 30 minutes early to the visitation so that he and I would get a longer one-on-one time to talk. Several years ago (shortly after his retirement) he saved the day in typical "George" fashion. I contracted the flu 6 days before my play was set to open. Knowing that I was stuck at home, stressed, and that my set was not completed--George came to Glenvar for two days and led all of my classes in Set Construction so that the show could go on. That wasn't an anomaly---for George that sort of thing was the norm. He had a true Servant's Heart, and for that, I'm sure his crown in Heaven will be enormous. For all who knew him--this loss is extra painful because men of George's caliber are rare indeed. I believe we can all honor his memory by being a little more caring, a little more giving, and a little more selfless. Rest in Peace George---You have earned it. Steve Franco/RC Class of '89

Karen, I am so sorry to hear about George, he was absolutely one of the nicest people I have ever known. Chuck always enjoyed his time with George at the sawmill and we are fortunate to have the beautiful wooden gifts he made for us over the years. Our hearts are with you and your family at this time. I hope your wonderful memories of him bring you some peace and healing as time goes by. We are thinking of you daily and sending our love.

I learned about George’s passing today. I worked with him many years ago when I was an assistant in the Fine Arts Department at Roanoke College. He was always kind and the students adored him. I know he will be greatly missed! Prayers for peace for the family.

Sad loss for his friends and family. I too fondly remember George from many years ago in high school and early. We grew up together. He was always a good and kind friend. Bill Hutchison.

Teacher, mentor, craftsman, husband, father, grandfather, Mason, citizen, and friend - George was a sterling example of each of these and many more. His kindness, sense of humor, work ethic, and devotion to his family were unparalleled. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him. God bless Karen and the rest of the family now and always.

George Arthur was such a fine man. He was a gentlemen with a grand sense of humor and a heart of gold. He understood what it meant to be a man of honor. I think that’s why he was such an amazing friend - he always knew what was important in life and it was family and friends. George truly was one of those people who was there when you needed a friend - he was so incredibly generous with his time and talent. He made these beautiful frames for me to protect my family keepsakes and I look at them everyday. And, he and Lisa Warren were there for me when I needed help after my sweet mother passed. I feel so fortunate to have worked with him while I was at Roanoke College as he was a buddy and a professional, but most importantly he was a friend. One of those rare people who truly understands what friendship really means whether he saw you everyday or once every ten years. George, you left us on my birthday and I will celebrate your memory on every future birthday. But, what I will remember most about you was your capacity for love. And, anyone who knew you, knew how deep your love for was for the first loves of your life, Karen, your children and your entire family. You will be missed until we are all together again in His presence. Thank you for being my friend.

Karen, Brit, Lindsay and family, Billy and I and all the girls are so sorry to hear this sad news. Know that he touched so many lives. I know that Salem HS, Northside and Roanoke College received so much of his expertise, as well as kindnesses. Students from all over have known his passion and care for them. He has left a legacy. We will continue to keep you in our prayers. May you all feel God's love holding you up, getting you through these days and then years to come. Christ's peace be with you all. Love, Patty and Billy Pope, Cassidy, Callie, Kelsey and Karlie

I was blessed to have known George since high school, when Karen was my wonderful English and Theater teacher. He would graciously help us out when needed! My senior year at Roanoke College was practically spent at the theater. I purposefully arranged my schedule so that my last semester at college would be spend doing something I loved. George was such a kind, talented and generous person. He always made you feel like a friend, not just a student, and gave us all room to learn and have fun at his theater. He kept the scene shop in pristine order, but gave us all plenty of room to explore and go nuts within his wise guard rails. We built sets, but more importantly, lasting memories and bonds of friendship! Even when I didn't have a class at Olin, I would often stop by just to chat with him. He was incredibly talented, a master craftsman/artist, but never boasted about his gifts -- he loved to boast about his family instead! I think it's safe to say that George WAS Olin Hall when he was there. But he made his domain feel like everyone's home. Karen, I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing George with all of us!
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day." 2 Timothy 4:7-8

George taught one of the first classes I took at Roanoke College in 2014. In that class, I met some of my best and life-long friends. He made space for us to be creative, be funny, feel our feelings, celebrate our happiness, and foster genuine relationships. I remember when his first granddaughter was born, how excited he was and how we all celebrated the news with him. It was an honor to share in his family happiness. I know few men kinder than George. May he Rest In Peace and may his family know comfort.

George was an amazing individual. As a lot of people know, he mentored many theater kids at Roanoke (Myself included) I will never forget the time we had together (Except maybe someday I can forget the Peking Acrobats show at Roanoke that was probably one of the craziest experiences I have ever had in theater) George you will be missed. The world is a little less bright without you in it. Britt, Karen, and Lindsey, you guys are in my families thoughts and prayers.

Thinking of the Arthur's today. While George was such a great customer, a Great Family Man, and a strong Christian Man the biggest thing of think of is that he was my friend. A Very Special One. I will always cherish our parking lot chats about Life and all of our fun laughs together. Love All of You.

Not only did George touch the lives the many students (my son Danny included), he touched the lives of everyone who knew him. I’ll remember him when I am in Antrim Chapel and look at the lovely wooden cross he made from a tree on the campus. I’ll think of him when I am in Olin Hall Theater because he was involved in every event there for 37 years. I’ll think of him when I see my beautiful wooden tulips and other gifts he crafted. Heartfelt love and sympathy to George’s family from the Stoutamire family.
