Obituary of Denise Kershner

Denise "Nana" Kershner, 62, of Hardy passed away Monday March 21, 2022.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Margaret Hillman; and brothers, Allen and David Hillman.

Denise was somewhat of a pioneer in the world of manufacturing.  She was the first female welder employed by Pullman Standard Railcar and later worked as the first female welder for Virginia Transformer.

Surviving is her husband, Jeffery "Howie" Kershner; sons, Joe Pitera (Rebekah), Jordan Pitera (Cara), and Jarred Pitera (Emily Brown); grandchildren, Dustin Szabo, Claire, Gabe, Jace, Mia, and Jacob Pitera; step grandchildren, Chris Green and Kayla Elder; brothers, Gary Hillman (Denise), Tom Hillman (Diane), and Eric Hillman; sisters, Janice Costello, Maxine Hillman, and Phyllis Mays.

The family will honor her request that there be no public viewing or visitation.  The family will schedule a private celebration of her life at a later date.  Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home 3912 Electric Road Roanoke, VA  24018.
