Eleanor Elaine (Keith) Elrod, age 97, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2022, in Roanoke, VA where she had been residing since 2015.  She was born November 21, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of M. Allen and Maude Miller Keith.  After graduating high school in Grand Junction, Colorado, Eleanor earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1946 and her Master of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Nebraska in 1949. 

 

On December 31, 1945, she married Lloyd Melvin Elrod, who preceded her in death on December 22, 1995.  Their son, Keith Arthur Elrod, also preceded her in death on June 14, 2004. 

 

Before moving to Elkins, Eleanor was a Philosophy professor at a community college in Chicago, IL.  She came to Elkins in 1967 when her husband joined the faculty at Davis and Elkins College.  In 1973, she started as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and became coordinator in 1981, a position she held until her retirement at age 85 in 2009.  In 2009, Eleanor was honored by the Allohak Council of the Boy Scouts of America Highland District in receiving their Distinguished Citizen Award.  She was a member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and the Grace Episcopal Church.  She belonged to the American Philosophical Association, American Association of University Women, and the Davis and Elkins College Aid. 

 

Eleanor is survived by her daughter-in-law, Martha Whiteman Elrod of Roanoke, VA and two granddaughters, Jennifer Elrod Blaney and Andrea Elrod Hunsberger.Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home (540)366-0707.
