Alyce Bass Sydenstricker, 89 of Salem died Friday, March 15, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert "Boo" Sydenstricker, Jr. and her daughter, Alyce Jo Thompson. Mrs. Sydenstricker taught in the Roanoke County School System for over twenty years before retiring from the Salem City Schools. After her retirement she volunteered with literacy groups helping young children learn to read. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her sons, Hubert "Bud" Sydenstricker, III and spouse Luc Agosta, John R. Sydenstricker and wife Karen; grandchildren, Katie Gerarge, Betsy Tkachenko, Christine Scalisi, Rob Sydenstricker, Mike Thompson, and Steve Thompson; five great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the Virginia Literacy Foundation 413 Stuart Circle Executive Suite # 303 Richmond, Virginia 23220. A graveside service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home & Crematory. 366-0707
