Obituary of Mabel Rider Semones

Mabel Elizabeth Rider Semones, born April 24, 1938, went to be with her Lord and Savior September 29, 2021. She was

preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years Bobby Gene Semones, her mother Mary Heck, stepfather Otey

Heck, brother Otey Heck Jr and nephew Jimmy Arnold. Mabel is survived by her sons Mike Semones and significant other

Anne Burton, David Semones and wife Debra; grandchildren Ashli, Mitchell, and Nicholas; sister Sue Arnold, brothers

Robert Rider and wife Ruth, Walter Heck and wife LG, sister-n-law Sandy Heck; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and

loved ones.

Mabel worked for Woolworth in downtown Roanoke while attending William Byrd High School. She later became a bank

teller for Mountain Trust Bank. She worked her way up to Assistant Vice President and retired from Bank of America

after 25 plus years of service.

She served on the Vinton Dogwood Committee and volunteered for the Roanoke County Schools reading program. She

was passionate about giving to those less fortunate. Specifically, she and Bobby found great joy in providing Christmas

gifts for underprivileged children. After retirement, Mabel enjoyed her hobbies of painting, ceramics, bird watching, and

collecting stamps and vintage coins.

Mabel was a member of Vinton Baptist Church. She was known to her family as “Nana” and was a friend to everyone she

met. Nana loved to spoil her grandchildren and spending time with them. She was also a two-time breast cancer

survivor. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Susan G. Komen organization at

A graveside service for family and friends will be held 3:00 PM on Friday, October 1, 2021 at Mountain View Cemetery in

Vinton and officiated by Rev. Dr. Chris Monroe. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpson Funeral Home. Online
