James Lee Hanson “Jim” “Bake-A-Cake”

James Lee Hanson escaped this mortal world Sunday, September 19, 2021, to take a seat at the eternal house of cards with endless coffee and maybe a few other things we won’t mention.

Jim was born on September 14th, 1945 to the late Arthur Hanson and Lillian (Johnson) Hanson, who are undoubtedly responsible for his witty humor and his ability to take your money playing cards.

At the age of 18 with the company of two friends, there was a simple flip of a coin to determine which branch of Military they would enlist in.  Jim started the adventure of his adulthood by serving the United States Air Force for over 3 years.

In 2002, Jim suffered a severe stroke that brought him back home to Roanoke, Virginia. Jim resided at The Virginia Veteran’s Care Center for the last 18 years of his life, where he discovered his love for sketching and was spoiled rotten by his much loved, extended family there. Special thanks to the staff of The Virginia Veterans Care Center especially Co-Co and PJ for the continued love for Jim and amazing care.

Jim has impacted the lives of many, leaving them with great memories, lots of laughter and his never forgotten “choice phrases” (that only he could come up with). Of the many people who knew him best, he is survived by his only daughter Lorri A. Hanson (Michael Hogan), and his only grandson Brandon Wiley (Jim’s heart and soul). He is preceded in death by his late wife Mary Hanson who is also survived by her children Dean Sheppard (Cindy Curl) and Greg Sheppard. Jim is also survived by his Loving Sister Gloria Guthrie, Brother Russ Hanson (Nitka), and many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his family, Jim is survived by his lifelong best friends, Freida S. Waltz and Jack Jones. He is preceded to the eternal poker table by his other lifelong best friend, Danny Moore (Janet) who is also survived by Jim’s Special God children Dana, Josh and Heather Moore as well as many lifelong friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday, September 25, 2021 from 2-3 pm with a Memorial Service at 3 pm at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, Virginia 24019.

Party of Life immediately following the service at the home of Lorri and Mike.

In Lieu of flowers, please make a Donation to the Virginia Veterans Care Center in his name.
