Obituary of Lois Camper Hopkins

Please share a memory of Lois to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Lois Marie Camper Hopkins, 90, of Roanoke died Friday, July 16, 2021 at Friendship Healthcare Center.  Born in Covington, VA in 1931 she was the daughter of the late R. M. "Jack" and Obelia Gross Camper.

She was a 1948 graduate of Covington High School, received her degree from Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA in 1952 and her education was completed later at VPI & SU in 1974.

Her career as a home economics teacher began in 1957 with a wonderful eight years at James Wood High School in Winchester, Frederick County, VA.  The next position was with Roanoke City Schools with one year at Lee Junior, followed by twenty-five years at Breckinridge Junior High School retiring in 1986.

Her church, Northminster Presbyterian, where she was very active and was ordained both as a deacon and an elder, was very important to her.  Following retirement from teaching in 1986, she enjoyed many years volunteering, especially at Northminster.

Her great joy was the 35 years she spent with her husband Edward Hopkins.  They were married in 1976 and, until he died in 2012, enjoyed their home as well as travel both here and abroad.

Lois is survived by her beloved brother, David Camper and his wife Barbara, of Mechanicsville, VA; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Camper, Camarillo, CA; step children, Martha Hopkins, and Nancy Hopkins-Garriss both of Harrisonburg, VA, and the Rev. Reed Hopkins of Churchville, VA; three nieces and two Nephews.  A brother, Richard M. Camper passed away in 1989.

Please, please, let any remembrances be as contributions to the Presbyterian Community Center 1228 Jamison Avenue SE Roanoke, VA  24013 or to Roanoke Area Ministries 824 Campbell Ave. SW Roanoke, VA  24016.

A service of remembrance will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Northminster Presbyterian Church 3911 Greenland Avenue Roanoke with the Rev. Russ Merritt officiating.  Interment will be private.

In Lois' many years of teaching, most of her classes held a simple reception at the conclusion of the class.  To remember all of these years, a similar reception will be held in the fellowship hall of Northminster Presbyterian Church following the remembrance service.
