Obituary of Bobby Gene Semones
Bobby Gene Semones, born September 26, 1935, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 9, 2021 surrounded by the love of his family. He was preceded in death by his parents Wilson and Mildred Semones and sister Joyce Wilkins. Bobby is survived by the love of his life and wife of 66 years, Mabel Rider Semones. He is also survived by his sons Mike Semones, significant other Anne Burton and David Semones, wife Debra; grandchildren Ashli, Mitchell, and Nicholas; Aunt Evelyn Willis; and many other family, friends, and loved ones.
Bobby retired from General Electric after 35 years of service in 1993. He spent his years at GE building computer control panels and was able to travel the United States installing them on our Navy ships. He was also the President of the International Union of Electrical Workers, always a leader and mentor to others.
Bobby’s love of sports and coaching helped to shape the lives of many in Vinton. He was President and an active member of the Vinton Booster Club for over 15 years. He coached recreation baseball, basketball, and football for 10 years. He was the voice of William Byrd Terrier football for 25 years. He was given the key to Vinton on “Bobby Semones Day” on August 3, 1977 in appreciation for his valuable contributions to the recreation program in the Town of Vinton.
Bobby was an active member of Vinton Baptist Church, serving as Deacon and on numerous committees including bus ministry, kitchen, and property. He cherished his time as a member of the Breakfast Lions Club for nearly 20 years. During his tenure, he was awarded the Melvin Jones Award, the highest honor in Lions.
To his family he was “Papaw” and to his community he was a friend to anyone he met. Bobby is known for being a man of many talents and his willingness to serve others. He was a handyman, an incredible cook, and was known for making and sharing hundreds of pounds of the best homemade fudge during the holiday season.
A Graveside service will be held 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 for Family and Friends at Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton.A Memorial Service will be held Friday July 30, 2021 with a Visitation from 2:00 – 3:00 PM and Service from 3:00 – 4:00 PM at Vinton Baptist Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpson Funeral Home.
