Obituary of Ernest Washington
Ernest Washington, 61, passed into eternal rest on Friday, July 2, 2021. He was born on October 28, 1959 in New York City to George and the late Martha Washington. He was the eldest of his siblings: Carol Owusu, Marlene Denny, Susan Washington and Charlene Washington.
Ernest was raised in Elliston, Virginia where he was a four-sport athlete at Shawsville High School. He matriculated to James Madison University where he became a record-setting track athlete, graduated with a degree in management information systems and met Beryl Washington, whom he married in 1984.
The two were blessed with Cherelle in 1985 and Ernest II (Ernie) in 1987. Ernest cherished his children. He was a rock in their lives, supporting them without hesitation in every way. While he was so proud of their accomplishments, he treasured the people they were more.
Ernest was a lifelong fan of the New York Knicks, the New York Yankees and his absolute favorite team, the New York Giants. Furthermore, he never missed an opportunity to support his children’s Alma Maters: Cherelle’s Ohio State Buckeyes and Ernie’s Virginia Cavaliers and North Carolina Tarheels (where he attended law school).
Ernest looked forward to many annual traditions, including fishing trips with his dad, George, attending the Big Ten championship game with his cousin, Ranson, and spending holidays with his family. He was a great chef and enjoyed making meals for loved ones. He was also an avid watcher of the History and ID channels as well as movies featuring submarines.
Being both a man of strong faith and family values, Ernest was a role model, especially to his nieces, nephews and cousins who he adored. He was a proud staple at gatherings for family and friends’ celebrations. He was incredibly reliable and frequently gave his support, time or donations to those in need.
During the pandemic Ernest was able to spend an extended period with his family in Illinois which he called "an amazing gift." His passing was unexpected, but there is no uncertainty that his determination, joyful spirit and immeasurable zest for life will reside in the hearts of those who were close to him.
Ernest was immensely loved by his children, family and friends, and they will forever cherish his memory.
